For starters, we don’t have a standard bank account!
Secondly, Standard Bank will never SMSes asking for personal or financial information. This is a common phishing scam.
What to do if you receive a suspicious SMS:
- Don’t click on any links in the SMS
- Don’t open any attachments in the SMS
- Block the number
- Delete the SMS immediately
- Forward the SMS to phishing@standardbank.co.za
- Report the incident to your local South African Police Service (SAPS) station
How to avoid phishing or smishing:
- Don’t share personal or financial information with anyone, even if they claim to be from Standard Bank
- Be wary of unsolicited emails, phone calls, or visits
- Hover over links in emails to confirm the website’s legitimacy
- Enter website URLs manually instead of clicking on links in emails or SMS
- Report suspicious activity to Standard Bank as soon as possible
What to do if you suspect fraud:
- Call Standard Bank’s fraud line at 0800 222 050
- Contact the major credit bureaus in South Africa, such as TransUnion, Experian, and Compuscan
- Monitor your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized activity
